GENTIANA  OLIVIERI

 

 

A much admired tufted species from Turkey to the Tien Shan. Strap shaped leaves to 4 in. and from early summer for a long period 6-8 in stems of many pale blue flowers with a large white throat. Lime lover.

SINO ORNATA 

NEW

AGM     A must for any peat bed collection. Quite large mats of mid green foliage are produced over the summer months (keep in check by pulling pieces from the edges). In September through to the first hard frosts many deep blue tubular flowers are produced in succession. Must have full sun to give of its best. Flowers are long lasting in water.

AGM 

Almost prostrate mid green leafy stems radiate about 8 inches forming a quite dense mat. Late summer the clusters of deep blue 2 inch long bell shaped flowers are  freely produced. Requires a moisture retentive position. 3 in.

'STRATHMORE'

AGM

An autumn flowerer, this one a hybrid, for the peat bed. Here it is  most admired by our visitors. Makes a dense mat of apple green foliage, which in September/October disappears beneath a mass of the palest blue trumpets. 3 ins.

VERNA

The well known spring gentian from the European Alps, but also a British native. Glowing blue trumpets almost hide the deep green foliage. Loves lime. 3 in.

GERANIUM DALMATICUM

AGM  One of the smallest species that we grow. Low mats of much divided evergreen glossy leaves about an inch across. Dusky rich pink flowers with rounded petals and a boss of orange/crimson anthers and stigma.

ORIETALITIBETICUM

 

This tuberous rooted Chinese endemic has rounded lobed marbled green leaves to about 4 inches high, topped through the middle of summer with large deep pink flowers. Can quickly form a mat.

GYPSOPHILA          ARETIOIDES 'CAUCASICA'  

 

This is probably one of the most commonly seen entrants in the 'cushion' classes at AGS Shows. Deep green, congested rosettes produce a very firm cushion. Small white, green veined flowers, 4-5 on very short stems. 2 inches.

HABERLEA RHODOPENSIS  

AGM  Divisions from a plant that gives a brilliant display in early summer, being covered with its mauve flowers on gently arching stems for over six weeks. Needs some shade here and a moisture retentive soil. 5 inches.

HELIANTHEMUM SERPYLLIFOLIUM

Not your usual 'rock rose' but a small scree growing shrublet. Prostrate stems to 12 ins long carry dark green shiny foliage. From May onwards, terminal racemes of pale mauve/pink petalled flowers shading to darker centres, surrounding a mass of bright yellow exerted stamens.

A dryland sunlover grown from Gothenburg seed. Typical silvery felted leaves producing short upright growth that terminates in heads of brilliant yellow flowers.Not yet grown outside. 2-50

AGM We have for many years grown this excellently marked leaved form of lividus, they are so good that they usually all sell on the nursery. 10 in.

NIGER 'LOUIS COBBETT'

A highly desirable selection that is larger and has darker stems and leaves than the type. Flower stems and early buds are beetroot red, the flowers open a delightful shade of pink that deepens with age. Henrik Zetterlund shot almost a full roll of film on our stock plant when he visited in April a few years ago. 15in.

H.‘Louis Cobbett’ is grown from seed, not all come true but they are easily sorted. This is the one that comes with pure large white flowers.

A lovely form from the Ashwood stable that has beetroot red stems carrying fairly large shiny pewtery green leaves very heavily marked with cream  veins. Enhanced for a long period through spring into summer with tall spires of 8-10 rounded cup shaped shell pink flowers, each over an inch across. 18 in..

This is the strain that in Japan has produced many fantastic forms with massive variation. The form that we offer is seed grown from a very good deep pink flowered form but their will be variation in the flower colour. Lovely mottled leaves are produced after the flowers in early spring and remain a feature for most of the year. As with other forms needs a semi shaded moisture retentive position.  3 ins.

Flowering size, seed grown plants from the best mottled leaf form of this woodlander. Often shown in the foliage classes at AGS Shows. Usually has creamy white flowers but can be pale pink or pale blue.

A true miniature that could feature on any rock or scree garden. Small leafy shrub, that from a very small size will produce its large rosy pink flower heads 4-5 inches across. Sunny well drained bed.   2 ft. tall eventually.

A brilliant little shrub that enjoys our sunny scree. Twiggy almost prostrate branches with many rounded slightly hairy leaves, and masses of deep creamy mustard coloured upturned flowers with prominent darker stamens. 3 inches.

HUMIFUSUM

 

First seen on the raised beds around the alpine house at the RBG, Edinburgh. Lovely contrast between creeping red stems, small pale green leaves and many pale mustard yellow flowers. Is now doing well on trough and scree here. 1 inch.

OLYMPICUM

From a central rootstock semi procumbent stems clothed in small mid green leaves radiate to make a mounded plant about 24 inches across. Large deep mustard flowers with prominent exerted stamens are produced throughout the summer months.

INCARVILLEA   ZHONGDIANENSIS CLD 233  

Formerly identified as I. compacta, this has now been classified by Kit Grey-Wilson as a new species. Seed obtained from Gothenburg Botanic Gardens flowered in their third year here on our rock garden. A lovely addition to the range of forms coming from China. Large typical soft red flower, with neat distinct foliage. 6 in.

One of the best garden iris that we grow and much admired by our many visitors. Narrow mid green foliage and almost pure black flowers over a long period. Superb form. 12 inches.

SETOSA

 

 

Maybe a little tall for the average rock garden at about 18 inches but in the right position a very useful plant. Narrow foliage and on a stout stem several flowers of a purple blue with yellow and white areas and dark veins.

SETOSA ssp. 'CANADENSIS'

Rated by Brian Mathew as 'a thoroughly good garden plant', we agree. Flat topped open flower about 2 inches across of a delicate lavender blue. 10 inches.
