ALBUCA SHAWII

This lovely S African bulb is proving to be extremely hardy in Norfolk  and a useful addition to the alpine house as it flowers right through the summer months to the beginning of September. The linear foliage reaches about 16 inches and the long racemes of butter yellow flowers with green stripe top it at about 20 inches.

 In full growth these  delicate plants are a little brittle. Our mail order customers may find some damage to leaf and flower. However even if the top becomes damaged your plant will usually make regrowth in the current season and will certainly regrow the following year. Those  suitable for garden growing are marked with (G)

An unusual species which is possibly best in a shady semi woodland situation. Grows from long branched yellow tubers that will increase readily in favourable conditions. Lush, bright green foliage is topped in May with bright purple-red dense flowers

POPOVII Young seed grown plants from this vigorous and easy to please member of the Leontocoides section. Glaucous upright foliage and masses of deep chocolate purple and cream flowers. The main body and long curved spur are cream the broad ‘nose’ is the chocolate purple. A lovely combination. Needs maximum light to maintain character. 8-00

This form of c. wendelboi (which can be quite variable in colour) is one of the deepest, being a rich purple pink.

WENDELBOI   JONAS 338

A collected form originally from the Ruksans stable. It is a very sturdy form with dense heads of mid purple flowers over typical parsley like foliage. One of the best.

Possibly the beat known and most sought after form of C. wendelboi. Compact spires of  deep red wine colour, usually comes true from seed.

CORYDALIS SOLIDA

The solida group are very mixed and misnamed. Fortunately when Henrik Zetterlund visited us in spring 97 he corrected those mis-named so we can now offer them with confidence. All make superb garden plants lighting up semi shaded areas in spring.

These come in all shades of pink, from delicate almost white, through mid pink and lilac to deep mauve. Long flowering outside with a little shade. 6 in.                          2 per pot

AGM    One of the most dramatic of the autumn flowering bulbs, deep mauve substantial iris like flowers on 5-6 in. tubes. Favourite for the autumn shows but does well here on the peat bed. We now have sufficient of our really deep colour form to offer, hence the lower price than in earlier lists.

CYCLAMEN

  The cyclamen we offer are from home produced seed of selected plants. Our stock has been selected for good forms of leaf and flower for exhibition purpose. Most have now spilt over to make excellent garden plants where appropriate.

AGM  Some variation from pale to mid pink, but all are delightful. Best naturalised in a semi shaded area outdoors where self seeding will soon establish a colony. 2 inches.

Collected and highly rated by the Archibalds this Drakensberg endemic is early flowering producing typical willowy stems to 15 in. from tussocky grass like foliage. Bright purple pink wide open flowers are produced in sequence amongst rust-brown bracts.

Very large early flowering form of nivalis, note the yellowish ovary. Broad grey green leaves long flower on medium pedicel, large ‘V’ on inner, outer slightly lined grey. Quite vigorous, a clump is a fine feature.

ELWESII MONOSTICTUS 

We grow several forms of what used to be called G. caucasicus and all are much admired, being sturdy and upright with relatively broad grey green leaves and large statuesque flowers. Most are winter flowerers but this hangs on for spring.                                       3 per pot

Uncommon in the wild and in cultivation. Broad, bright green leaves and substantial flowers up to an inch long with dark green markings on each inner segment. Needs a summer dry position if grown outside. We have a clump at the base of a conifer which has done well for 5 years now. ‘SHAGGY’

We have our good friend and galanthophile Ann Borrill to thank for the name of this densely double snowdrop. Given to us by a work colleague over 20 years ago it is quite vigorous and had built up several large clumps when Ann admired it, she took some home and for her own recognition named it ‘Shaggy’. The logic behind the name is that its dense double centre has protruding ‘teeth’ giving it the shaggy appearance.               4 per pot

AGM   Flowers a little later than the other ipheions, the bright pale blue, white throated flower is stunning. Enjoy it in a pot where it will multiply quite well. A lovely small reticulate type Iris that is basically a deep lilac blue with a golden tongue on the fall surrounded by blue splashed white margins. 6 inches.

This rare, Spring flowering  species from Morocco is similar to L. longifolium but has shorter more glaucous leaves and carries more flowers per stem which can reach 15 in. at flowering time. Needs a drying off period in summer and some winter protection.

A North American woodlander much admired in late spring. From grain-like tubers just below the surface, arise a mat of  soft hairy leaves about an inch high, followed by delicate heads of soft pink flowers on 6 inch stems.

A little gem, bone hardy here. Small delicate pink goblets from neat dark green foliage in late spring. Stoloniferous so needs room to wander. Lovely in a pan . 2 in.

We sold out of this little known easy to please Muscari when Roy Lancaster included a photograph and description in the article that he wrote about the nursery in a spring edition of the ‘Garden’ It is the most majestic of the genus with large scented heads of creamy yellow flowers. Less often encountered than N. filifolia, it is similar, but the two toned pink flowers, up to a dozen on each 6 inch stem make it a more dramatic plant. Let it build up a good clump in a pan in the alpine house, as disturbance inhibits flowering performance.

THODEI 

We are very fond of Romuleas and rate this amongst the best. Collected by Brenda Anderson high in the Drakensberg mountains it is fully hardy. Upright  deep green grassy foliage to 6 in.. Less than half that height in early summer are produced a succession of large starry shiny pink flowers with a large golden centre. Illustrated AGS Bull. Vol. 63 p. 156

An excellent small bulb for the rock garden, flowers open as they push through the ground in early spring, followed shortly after by the leaves. Up to 6 pale blue flowers with a darker stripe on each petal on 6 in. stems. 2-00  

REVERCHONII

Relatively large racemes of mid blue cup shaped flowers each about an half inch across. Prefers a sunny position in free draining soil. 9 in.

ROSENII

We think that this is the first offering of this rare scilla. A delightful plant, not easy to please (Mathew). Large reflexed blue flowers (1 or 2) with white centres on very short stems. Cool position required.

STERNBERGIA LUTEA
